THE ECLECTUS GROUP...an organization for breeders of eclectus parrots. On May 1, 2000, the Eclectus Group became a formal organization, planned as a service organization to provide information and assistance to breeders of eclectus parrots and to formally represent the Eclectus subspecies in an official capacity with governmental authorities and non governmental entities dealing with parrots. Information: The Eclectus Group is designed to provide accurate and reliable information to members concerning diet, housing, husbandry, health, disease, subspecies identification, status in the wild and general management. Affiliations: AFA: The Eclectus Group is a specialty society affiliated with the American Federation of Aviculture. BIRDCOOP: The Eclectus Group is the official contact for eclectus subspecies with the BIRDCOOP (the forum where representatives from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) and representatives from various psittacine societies exchange information and coordinate plans for the long-term management of psittacine species in the United States). NAWA: The Eclectus Group represents the interests of the breeders of eclectus parrots with the National Avian Welfare Alliance (NAWA). NAWA is working to draft the model regulations under which bird breeders will be regulated by the USDA according to the requirements under the Animal Welfare Act. The Eclectus Group is directed by a board presently consisting of Joe Baker, Laurella Desborough, David Ivy, and Cathy Kelly. The overseas consultant for the Eclectus Group is Graham Taylor of Australia. The avian veterinary consultant is Dr. Brian Speer, board certified in avian specialties. Membership in the Eclectus Group is open to the following: individuals or organizations that breed eclectus parrots; zoo bird curators and keepers working with eclectus parrots; research scientists and conservation biologists interested in working with eclectus parrots. Currently there is no membership fee. Communication with the Eclectus Group is done primarily through e-mail. If a member does not have access to e-mail, then he or she can use fax, phone or regular mail.
